• First-round score of 66 puts 41-year-old in second place
• Vice-captain still hopeful of playing for Europe at Celtic Manor

Darren Clarke scored a five-under-par 66 in the first round of the Irish Open to maintain the good form that could secure him a surprise spot in the European Ryder Cup team.

Clarke’s round left him a stroke behind the early leader, Richard Green of Australia, and lifted the 41-year-old’s hopes of qualifying for Europe’s match against the United States in October.

If the Northern Irishman won in Killarney he would earn 500,000 Ryder Cup points, which would enable him to surge up Europe’s qualification points table from 21st spot. It would also grant him qualification for next week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio.

Clarke has been chosen as one of three non-playing vice-captains by the Europe captain, Colin Montgomerie, but he still has time to make the team for Celtic Manor. “I will play if I qualify and I think Monty will want me to,” Clarke said. “We spoke at length about it and Monty’s said he wants me there one way or another.”

Clarke was told this week that he has been given an invitation to play in the year’s final major, the USPGA Championship, beginning on 12 August. “It was a great bonus to get the information they had invited me before the [Irish Open] started,” Clarke said. “I hit 18 greens in regulation today.”

Green also enjoyed a satisfying round, with seven birdies. “There are some courses out there that have got so long over the last few years, I feel a bit inferior because I’m not a long hitter,” the left-hander said. “This is a nice old course for a change, a little bit old-school.”

Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion, Germany’s Marcel Siem and the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Gonnet shared second place with Clarke. Rory McIlroy, the tournament favourite, was a further stroke back.

But Robert Rock has been disqualified from the competition for signing for a wrong score. The 33-year-old from Staffordshire opened with a six-under-par 66 but did not spot that his card had him down for a par on the 14th and birdie at the next instead of the other way around.

“It’s my fault,” he said. “I checked it, but didn’t see it and it’s my job to do that. I don’t think I’ve been disqualified for anything before. I’d have preferred it to be after an 80!”

Justin Rose also had a bad day after he could only go around the course in a round of 74.

• Massa told to let Fernando Alonso overtake him in Germany
• ‘The time I say I am a No2 driver I will not race any more’

Just four days after being ordered to allow Fernando Alonso to overtake him and win the German grand prix, Felipe Massa has denied that he is Ferrari’s No2 driver and said he will walk away from Formula One the day he finds himself in that situation.

Via coded messages from his race engineer, Rob Smedley, Massa was forced to hand victory to his Ferrari team-mate at Hockenheim after leading for the majority of the opening 49 laps of the 67-lap race. Ferrari were found guilty of a breach of the rules that prohibits teams orders and fined $100,000 (£64,000).

Ferrari’s decision has effectively ensured Massa will now have to play second fiddle to Alonso for the remainder of the season. The Brazilian returned to the spotlight today on his return to the Hungaroring, where last year he almost lost his life, and was asked about his position in the Ferrari team. “The time I say I am a No2 driver I will not race any more, and I am not (a No2),” he said. “I will fight for the victory here, whatever the conditions.”

Asked what would happen if he found himself in the same situation, with himself in the lead and Alonso second, he replied: “I will win.”

Alonso is fifth overall in the world championship standings, 34 points behind McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, while Massa is eighth and a further 38 back.

Massa said what had happened at Hockenheim made him even stronger as a person and he bristled at a suggestion from a Brazilian reporter that he had betrayed his country by obeying the orders. “I will do everything I can always for my country,” he said. “For me, my country is the most important thing. I have proved already many times in my life … what I am able to do for my country.”

Massa said he had spoken to everyone within Ferrari about the situation post-Hockenheim. “I’ve spoken to everybody inside the team,” he said. “I’m not just here to race, I’m here to win, and that’s my point. Yes, I am working for the team. We know how important that is. I want the best for the team, but I am professional.”

His compatriot Rubens Barrichello, who while driving for Ferrari was famously ordered to let Michael Schumacher pass him in the final few metres of the 2002 Austrian grand prix, commiserated with Massa for what he had been through.

“I was very sorry to see that he had to go through such a bad thing,” he said. “Nobody should have to go through those feelings. Felipe is a friend and I wish he didn’t go through that.”

Barrichello said he had spoken to Massa about the situation at Ferrari but would not say what his advice had been.

• 26-year-old has been on loan in Brazil since January
• Brazilian forward due to return early next month

Robinho will return to Manchester City for the start of the season, their manager, Roberto Mancini, has confirmed.

The 26-year-old, who has been on loan at the Brazilian side Santos since January, has been linked with a permanent move away from City throughout the summer. However, no deal has materialised and it now appears the striker will reluctantly return to Eastlands following the international break.

“At this moment, no. But it depends on him,” Mancini told Sky Sports News when asked whether he had any issue with taking Robinho back. “The situation is that Robinho will finish his contract with Santos. After that he will stay in Brazil for another week, play for the national team [in a friendly against America in New Jersey on 10 August] and after that he will return to Manchester City.”

Robinho was City’s first marquee signing following their takeover in 2008 by the Abu Dhabi United Group, and has made 41 league appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals. City’s first league fixture of the new season is at Tottenham on 14 August.

• England Under-19s all-rounder was angry after being dropped
• Yorkshire launch full investigation into Rafiq’s actions

Yorkshire have suspended their young all-rounder Azeem Rafiq, ahead of an England and Wales Cricket Board disciplinary inquiry into his tirade of abuse on Twitter following his withdrawal from the Under-19 Test against Sri Lanka in Scarborough for disciplinary reasons.

Rafiq, the England U19s captain, was dropped after the first Test at Northampton as punishment for staying out into the early hours of the morning while the game was still in progress.

That brought an expletive-laden tirade on Twitter in which he called the man who made the decision – John Abrahams, the ECB’s elite player development manager – a “useless wanker”.

Yorkshire will also carry out a full investigation before deciding on what course of action they will take, independently from any punishment likely to be exacted by the ECB. Rafiq’s removal as the U19s captain seems certain and he is also likely to face a lengthy suspension.

Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s outgoing chief executive, who is leaving to take up the same role at the Scottish Football Association, said: “Azeem’s behaviour was totally unacceptable and the club will not tolerate it. Our professional players are role models to aspiring young cricketers and need to behave as such.

“Whilst Azeem has apologised formally to the ECB, the club and the coach in question the club still intend to carry out a full investigation before deciding on what disciplinary action to take. In the meantime, he is suspended on full pay and unavailable for selection.”

• Wigan striker was jailed for sexual assault last October
• Chairman wishes him well but rules out return to club

Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman, has backed down on his claim that Marlon King should never play football again but has insisted the player will not be welcomed back to the DW Stadium after the completion of his prison sentence today.

King was jailed for 18 months last October after being found guilty of sexual assault and actual bodily harm over an incident in a London nightclub, which occurred in December 2008 while he was on loan at Hull City.

Whelan terminated the striker’s contract and said at the time: “I cannot really see him coming back as a professional. I wouldn’t allow him back in, but I think a lot of other people will allow him back in.”

However, he backed down on that stance this morning, telling Talksport: “Marlon’s coming out today, he’s served his sentence, I’m sure he’s learned a lot and I forgive him and I wish him well if he gets back into the game.

“What I did say at the time was I do think every footballer should have a ‘passport’, a record of any injuries he has sustained in the game and if he has got a criminal record. That should be on his passport and that should be available to any club and any manager who’s going to sign that player.

“A lot of people commit crimes and go to prison and what they say is they’ve served a sentence and they’ve paid the penalty. It would be wrong of me to say: ‘No, he should never play football again.’”

Whelan added: “I was very upset at the time, but I really think you’ve got to forgive people because we all make mistakes and if he can get back into the game, good luck to him.

“It wouldn’t bother me if he came to play against us. But he’ll never play for Wigan, I’ll say that.”

Whelan has made it his aim to persuade the Premier League to enforce his “passport” scheme in a bid for transparency.

“If you’re signing a player and he’s got an injury and it’s not disclosed, I think that’s illegal and it should be disclosed. It’s exactly the same with a criminal record,” the 73-year-old said. “There’s so much money changing hands – when I paid £3m for Marlon King, I think we should have had all the information that was available on injuries and criminal records.”

• ‘We want to improve and Scott Parker is a big part of this’
• Grant backs Robert Green to get over disastrous World Cup

Avram Grant has insisted the sought-after midfielder Scott Parker will remain his West Ham United side’s heartbeat, while also backing the England internationals Robert Green and Matthew Upson to overcome their disappointing World Cups.

Tottenham yesterday had a bid worth a reported £7m for the player swept angrily off the table by the West Ham co-chairman, David Sullivan. Grant, the club’s manager, said: “We want to plan to improve for the next few seasons and Scott Parker is a big part of this process. He is a very good player and has a good influence on the young players. I’m sure if he was for sale that other teams would want him as well. But we are a team with ambition and we want to progress.”

Parker played alongside Green and Upson in West Ham’s 2-0 pre-season victory over MK Dons last night, secured with goals from Julien Faubert and Carlton Cole.

Green was dropped by England after his mistake gifted the USA their equaliser in the sides’ drawn opening group match while Upson played in the 4-1 second-round defeat to Germany. “Robert is a good goalkeeper. He is doing his job and he is training well,” Grant said. “Also, Matthew Upson played his first 45 minutes as well. It was good for them and for us.

“They are not children. They know disappointment is part of the game and they need to recover very quickly because they are playing for the team. What has happened has happened and we are looking forward. I have no worries at all, it was business as usual and they know that.”

Parker was the only player declared not for sale by Sullivan this summer, with Green, Upson and Cole all linked with moves away from Upton Park. But the West Ham vice-chairman, Karren Brady, stressed the club had turned down bids for players and the focus is on improving, not dismantling, the squad.

West Ham have been chasing the defender Tal Ben Haim and the Nice striker Loïc Rémy. Grant told the club’s website: “We are looking for players. There are good players in this team but we want to make the squad stronger and we are looking for two or three players that can improve the team. I am happy with what we have but I am always looking for a way of improving and making things better.”

• Andy Turner progresses with second-fastest time
• William Sharman also advances to semi-finals

Britain’s Andy Turner made an impressive start to his bid for gold in the 110 metres hurdles in the European Championships in Barcelona today.

Turner, ranked third in Europe this year, produced a near-flawless display to win his heat in 13.48 seconds, making him the second fastest qualifier for the semi-finals behind Hungary’s Daniel Kiss (13.44).

But the 29-year-old admitted he had a brief moment of panic when he thought he had been disqualified for a false start, when in fact it was Stanislav Olijar in the next lane.

“I felt a little bit scared when I saw the red marker next to my name,” Turner said. “I’d reacted off Olijar, he’d false started and then I went, but it’s been known to disqualify two people. But luckily I maintained my composure and just did what I had to do. It was a comfortable run, not flat out. I actually ran 13.30sec in Lausanne from lane eight when the guy in lane seven was disqualified so I thought it might be a good omen.”

His team-mate William Sharman, who beat Turner in the trials, also advanced to the semi-finals but only finished third in his heat in 13.60.

“I’m glad to get through, that’s all that matters,” said Sharman, who is running despite not having fully recovered from a broken wrist suffered in training in January. “I hit the second hurdle and that affected my acceleration but I managed to hang on to what I had.”

Torture Tunnels, Death Plunge, Stalag Escape … these are just a few of the obstacles tackled by competitors in the Nettle Warrior race. Would ‘wetneck’ Rachel Dixon go the distance?

I am crouching beside the Torture Tunnels. Groans escape the entrance hole, punctuated by shouts of pain. A wave of panic washes over me, but I’ve come this far; I can’t give up now. I take a deep breath and drop down into the muddy gap. As I start to drag myself through a narrow concrete pipe, in the pitch-black, a woman screams: she’s just been caught by an electric wire, invisible in the darkness.

This is Nettle Warrior, the summer version of Tough Guy, an endurance event in Perton, Staffordshire. Like the original, which takes place in January, Nettle Warrior involves a gruelling cross-country run and assault course. Unlike Tough Guy, competitors don’t have to deal with sub-zero temperatures. To compensate, they go twice around the assault course instead of once, spend more time submerged in muddy water, and tackle 7ft stinging nettles. Suffice to say, it’s no walk in the park.

The organisers conjure an aura of terror in the build-up: the race is billed as the “most dangerous test of mental and physical pain, fear and endurance” in the world. We had to sign death warrants before competing, were inundated with warnings about hypothermia, tetanus and ‘flesh rippers’, and were emailed tales of past participants’ terrible injuries. The scare tactics worked: I was petrified.

The macho nature of the event is also hyped up. Officials wrote our race numbers on our foreheads in marker pen. On successful completion of the race, Tough Guys are permitted to shout “Yohimbé“, which apparently translates as “My dick’s bigger than yours”. Women are vastly outnumbered by men, and tend to be accompanied by solicitous male partners.

However, as many readers pointed out when I wrote about my training regime, Tough Guy/Nettle Warrior is not really terrifying at all (provided, as tomlozethwaite put it, “you don’t mind heights, fire, water, mud or confined spaces. Or barbed wire. Or nettles”), nor is it an ultra-serious test of fitness. The first clue to this was the gang of guys dressed as Smurfs. And the women dressed as fairies. And the man wearing nothing but a thong … It is a challenging test of endurance, though, and above all it is a lot of fun.

In the moments before the cannon fired to start the race, I was overcome with a kind of grim resignation. The start is staggered, and as a ‘wetneck’ (first-timer), I was at the back of the pack. When I finally crossed the starting line, I half-ran, half-slid down the steep slope and set off through what resembled a minefield (they were actually flares, but created a convincingly smoky warzone effect).

As a very reluctant jogger I had dreaded the cross-country run more than anything else, so I was probably one the few competitors to actively welcome the pits filled with muddy water that greeted us almost immediately. Anything to break up the run. When I emerged, soaking wet and caked in filth, and ran on feeling twice as heavy as usual, I did rethink my enthusiasm somewhat. But with more than 2,500 runners the trail ahead quickly filled up, and soon there were more bottlenecks than clear runs, allowing plenty of chances for a breather.

This quickly emerged as a theme: get wet and muddy; queue for a bit; run when you get the chance. Luckily, the weather was kind – overcast but warm. In January, it must be a different story. As previous competitors had warned me, it’s nearly impossible to get ahead of the pack and finish in a fast time unless you start near the front. For most, though, the challenge is merely to complete the event, not to try to win it. As the founder, Billy Wilson (aka Mr Mouse), said on Sunday: “It’s not a race, it’s an event – it’s for people to come and challenge the Tough Guy course. Everybody here is a winner.”

The slaloms, a punishing series of hill runs, are infamous in Tough Guy circles, so I was relieved to run up and down them with ease … or so I thought. In actual fact, they were just the warm-up hills. I defy anyone to tackle the real slaloms with anything approaching ease. Imagine a sheer hillside. Now picture yourself climbing up and running down it, again … and again … and again. I think there were around a dozen slaloms in all, though it’s hard to be sure – by the end I was a little delirious.

The rest of the run was a breeze in comparison: crawling under nets and jumping over giant hay bales were nothing next to those hills. That is, until we reached the mud slaloms. Similar to the hill slaloms, these involved sliding down a muddy bank into pond full of filth, clambering out again – with great difficulty if, like me, you’re somewhat vertically challenged – moving down the bank, and repeating. And repeating. And repeating. It was at this point that the utter pointlessness of the whole endeavour hit home to everyone, and people reacted in one of two ways. They either embraced the futility, as I did, and doggedly ploughed on – or they cheated. In fact, from this moment onwards the cheating – mainly skipping obstacles – was rife. Not that I’m bitter …

On a more positive note, this was also the point that the legendary Tough Guy spirit was revealed and everyone started helping everyone else, offering leg-ups out of ponds or holding out a helping hand from the bank. The whole race was notable for its camaraderie and cheerful, ‘we’re all mugs together’ atmosphere.

Slaloms over and nearly two hours in, I finally hit the assault course. Obstacles came thick and fast: the Colditz Walls, the Behemoth, the Dead Leg Swamp, the Stalag Escape … The indoor climbing training I had done came into its own as I tackled the intimidatingly named A-frames, cargo nets and rope crossings. The only hairy moment came when a particularly tall man chose the same roped route as me, stretching the two ropes so far apart that I almost lost my grip and fell headlong into the waiting nettles.

My favourite obstacle was, contrary to its disturbing name, the Death Plunge. This involved walking the plank, plunging into the lake below, and swimming to shore – tremendous fun. The obstacle I had most feared, the Underwater Tunnels, had been replaced this year with some simple log ducking, which was both a relief and a letdown.

I was thankful for my small stature on several occasions. The aforementioned Torture Tunnels were agony for the legions of large, muscular men dragging themselves on their bellies through a very confined space, but relatively easy for anyone who could fit through on their hands and knees (I even managed to avoid the electric shocks). Ditto the crawls through tyres and under barbed wire.

A lake-based log carry and a rafting challenge are unique to the summer event. Some competitors were shivering thanks to the prolonged immersion in the cold water, but I’d taken up kayaking as part of my training and become accustomed to it, which was a big help.

On my second circuit of the assault course the runners thinned dramatically, leading me to conclude that either a) a lot of people had dropped out, b) a lot of people had skipped the second lap, or c) I was very slow. I think it was probably a combination of all three.

I didn’t have much time to worry about it as I slogged my way towards the end, leaping up and over the Anaconda as I went. There was just time for one more crippling hill climb, one more slide in the mud, and one more soaking in filth before I rounded the corner and made a break for the finish line. The relief was immense, but so was the sense of achievement. Yohimbé!

My top tips for Nettle Warrior

Train harder than you need to. I had no ambitions beyond completing the event without injury, but I trained hard: boxing, climbing, kayaking, running, cycling, strength training, yoga, team sports … This made the event itself pretty easy, and dramatically sped up my recovery.

Work on your balance, grip and core strength. You’ll need them all for the assault course.

Enter with a friend or a group. I was on my own, thinking that I wouldn’t want to hold someone back, or be held back myself. In actual fact, the bottlenecks mean it’s easier to stay together than to go it alone. Unless you’re ultra-competitive, it’s more of a fun challenge than a race, and most things are more fun with two.

Plan ahead. If you do want to compete with the frontrunners, pay extra for a better start position. Failing that, get fit enough to sprint the first section of the run to overtake the crowds. By the time you get to the slaloms, it’s too late.

Wear gloves. This was a piece of last-minute advice kindly emailed to me by reader Chris Pile. I opted for fingerless cycling gloves and they were invaluable. Otherwise, as Chris pointed out, “The wet ropes will rip up your bare hands.” Ouch.

Take a supporter. Supporters can get close to the action, so they can ply you with jelly babies and sports drinks when you need them, and take lots of embarrassing pictures.

Have fun! Nettle Warrior allows you to be a kid again: you get wet and muddy, feel unfathomably proud of yourself, and go to bed tired but happy. What could be better?

Over to you

I’m really interested to hear how my experience of Nettle Warrior tallied with that of other competitors. Did you compete in this year’s event? How was it for you? Perhaps you’ve done it in past years, or maybe you’ve braved the January version?

I’m also looking for a new fitness challenge, preferably one that combines pain with fun, rather than anything deadly serious – think Total Wipeout or Gladiators, not the Marathon des Sables. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
